I was there, it was a wonderful concert.

The PJ bit was incredible, particularly as I was not aware they were even on speaking terms. She sang beautifully and it was a great version.

Nick performed really well, he really gave new life to songs I previously thought were rather weak, such as Hold on to yourself, He wants you and Grinderman.

Warren Ellis did sound effects and background music for the readings, very atmospheric, similar to the audiobook.

I would have liked to have mnore readings, but then again, the song performances were brilliant, so it was a difficult choice in any case.

The band were a bit underrehearsed (except for Martyn P Casey, who was always spot on), but in a loose and playful way that somehow made the concert cooler.

Do get tickets for this tour, PJ or no PJ, you'll kick yourself if you miss it!

I have to concur with everyone else who has posted - It was an amazing evening. I had wondered how it would work but it was primarily a concert interspersed with three (?) readings and the audience feeling free to throw in any questions between songs/readings. It was a bit underrehearsed (Nick made a comment along those lines) - He lost his lyrics once or twice and, during the readings, pretty much everytime he got to the bottom of a page (usually midway through a sentence), he'd be frantically flicking through his papers trying to find the next page - but it all kind of added to the relaxed nature of the evening.

Being a big PJ Harvey fan, her joining him on stage was obviously the stand-out moment for me - Well done to whoever thought to ask Nick the 'Would you sing with PJ Harvey' question! I'm curious as to how relations between them are now as I hadn't heard they were talking and Nick seemed keen to stress that she didn't have to come and sing with him but maybe he just didn't want to put her on the spot like that.

These are the sachets of handcream (there were some in the foyer of the theatre and also on the seats):

...and here's a photo of Nick and Polly:

4 months, according to Nick in "The secret life of the love song" and I think he said it started during the filming of the video of "Heny Lee".

It was short lived yet, sounds like it was an intense affair. Much has been made of how terrible the break-up was. But I have heard that PJ was spotted at a couple of the shows during the DLD!!! tour.

I checked Collector's Hell, which states: 'played twice together with PJ Harvey on the European festival tour of 1996'.

Anyone know of any other instances?

plus the performance at The White Room on UK TV in February 96, and their performance at Eurokeennes festival in July 96 was filmed by MTV (I think there's an excerpt on youtube)

Forgot to mention - Someone was filming the show (with a large-ish hand-held video camera). Maybe there's going to be a DVD of the show - or hopefully at least some clips of it will pop up on something.

I think the brief affair was probably blown out of proportion by the fact that the two were well known artists, had similar audiences, and Nick framed TBC and The secret life of the lovesong around it. (Imagine breaking up with someone you've been going out with for 4 months and then your ex writing a record on the subject, touring and then giving a series of lectures based on it!)

People in general are not so worried about the rest of Nick's lovelife, which is probably a good thing.

In any case I'm happy that these two brilliant artists are back on friendly terms and they sing together from time to time.

Yeah, I saw the guy with the video camera as well. He certainly filmed the duet with Polly.

Bleddyn Butcher was taking photos as well.

Does somebody know how long approximately the gig lasted? I'm going to Antwerp, but my last train is at about 23.00. So not sure if i can cut that if he will play so many songs. And knowing me, i'm not one for leaving a show early either, last time my mum really had to drag me out of the gig or we would have missed our train Rolling Eyes
